24-06-2008 01:14 PM   Rants on summer holiday
as you may know
I'm doing the ib diploma program(me)
which is basically a 2 year hell.

im finishing the first year, and now is the time when the horrors of summer become imminent. the horrors. of summer. horrors.

in IB, summer sucks
s for sucks
u for unbelievable suck
m for mega suck
m for montrous suck
e for enormous suck
r for retarded amounts of suck.

we had mock exams, and it's clear even for good students like me that lots is to be revised/reviewed/revisited over summer. BUT there's no time for that, because we get homework. chocolateLOADS of it.

basically, IB doesn't fit in 2 years. it's like fitting rasputia through a cat flap

and I'm not even half finished. for IB, besides 6 subjects, you also get to do (yay!) CAS, Extended Essay and higher-education preparation (obviously). CAS basically means at least 150 hours of unpaid work. Extended essay is basically adding some university level academic writing to the mix as if it isn't enough yet, and needs to be 4000 words long.

in the very beginning (as in the first day/week) of next school year, our CAS should be about finished, our EE drafted, and our higher education sorted. apart from that, we get homework such as do A HUGE UNIT of self-study for physics, or read and analyse 3 books and make notes on them for english, to name a few. all of this is expected to be finished when we get back. oh AND we need to be absolutely comfortable with any of the stuff we learned this year, of course.

the only thing that makes a school year bearable is being able to do all the stuff you want to do in the summer

^^
this is my last summer in Hong Kong. after next year I'll be going to thailand with friends to celebrate, then i might be back for a week or so but probably move to amsterdam quite quickly. so that means i can't do any of the stuff i wanted to do. I wanted to learn chinese, japanese, maybe both, i wanted to get a job and make money so i had something to spend when i got back.... i want to do so much but i can't do anything.

28-04-2008 09:49 AM   [Howto] Pancakes
These are Dutch pancakes. They are the best. Others suck.

For 8 medium sized pancakes (like 15-20cm or so)

200g flour
500ml milk
some salt
some sugar (optional)
2 eggs
some margarine (for cooking)

Mix the flour with the salt and the sugar. Make a dent in the middle for the eggs and put them in. Add 200ml milk, and use on of these things to stir it around:
(yes, that thing. no, that's not my pic. yes, anything else will do)

Add the rest of the milk while ur stirring
Make it so that its like smooth

Leave it for 30 mins (optional)

Now, get a big pan (like 15-20cm), put in some butter and heat it, then use a soup spoon or whatever big spoon you have to pour in some of the stuff, and let it spread over the entire surface of the pan, unless your pan is huge. It will likely be way thinner than you are used to :D

Now wait till the bottom is golden brown and turn it over until the other side is golden brown, put it on a plate. Now either keep the plate warm and make more, or eat:

put sugar across the diameter of the pancake, roll it up so that you have a roll of pancake with sugar evenly divided :D cut into slices, enjoy !!

So im making a ball of rubber bands. Just start by folding up some rubber bands and then tieing others around them as tight as possible until you get a ball.

21-03-2008 02:03 PM   [Blag] On Easter, School, Procrastination and Being Away from EP
School holiday started at 12PM on tuesday :) So actually I've been free for 3 days without posting anything in my blog :( bad me.

Not next monday, but the monday after that I have to go to school, so it's one and a half week free. Sunday morning I'll be leaving for China where we will visit lots of places and see lots of stuff, and I'll only get back the next sunday at midnight, so I have to immediately get my ass to bed and after that, school.

That brings me to my next point, school. I've got a chocolateload of homework to do this holiday but I understand that theres no way I can do it all. The past two days I've actually got some done, mainly getting my work organised. The actual work remains procrastinated though. As for school, it's now going to be end of friggin MARCH when I get back to school, and the year ends effectively at the beginning of JUNE. so that's JUST APRIL AND MAY LEFT! Oh my gawd, I'm really stressing now. See, at the end of this year, I should have finished half of the diploma or something which basically means I have some grades set and stuff. Also most of the learning is THIS year, next year there's less work.

However, more importantly, at the end of this year my teachers will have formulated a list of predicted grades, and a list of extracurricular stuff I've done over the past year(s), both of which will be sent along with my UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS, THIS SUMMER! That brings me to my next very significant points: being away from EP. Spending all my days on a forum living an internet addict's life isn't going to get me into uni. I can't afford to not go to the uni I want just because of procrastination and lack of effort for a few years in my teens. I love EP, but it's very addictive and I actually spend HOURS A DAY here, which is probably not a good thing for me in the long run.

So, starting with my holiday in China, I'll be away from EP for a week. However, after that, I plan to be away for a longer period. At least another week I will stay off EP and see if I can improve myself a bit. If it goes well, I'll let myself visit again but I probably won't be as active as I am now anymore until I really sort it all out. I've tried just 'getting off EP and doing work' for the past week or two but it hasn't really worked yet, so now I need some more absolute measures to see if that helps. Besides, I think I may actually be 'addicted to Endless Paradigm', yet I'm not really doing much at all.

I've still got one more day here before I leave. I'll probably allow myself to post back about this within the week, but if you happen to be wondering where I am you know why I'm off.

20-03-2008 03:15 AM   28 Hours a Day, 6 Days a Week
I was wasting my time a few days ago reading through all the xkcd comics, and I found this one quite interesting:

Now I haven't researched it at all or anything, but I did see if I could possibly start actually doing this. The big plus is, as stated, that you get the whole saturday night awake, and not cause you stay up late but because it's actually day for you, so you aren't tired at all even at 8AM or whatever on some days. Also for me, this allows me to spend time with people in different time zones easily on some days. The biggest problem however is that it depends heavily on the flexibility of your working times.

If you work from home or have your own business, this is quite possible. However if you have a normal job, it's not really possible at all. If you go to school, it might still be possible. To see if it is possible for me I made a little spreadsheet and rearranged the hours a bit. My ideal one lets me go to school, stay up all saturday night, sleep more in the weekends than in the weekdays, and whatever. Here it is if you're interested:

http://tools.endlessparadigm.com/fsharel...&id=hb0wpx

The drawbacks are still:

- You have school at the end of the day on some days
- You live a completely different life than your friends and family
- People are awake when you're asleep, and may wake you up
- You miss stuff like dinner unless you live alone
- You only get 6 days a week

The advantages are great though:
- Stay up all saturday night without being tired!
- You are sometimes awake at night which gives you a lot of peace and quiet to work in
- You are awake at different times every day which gives you the opportunity to communicate with people in any time zone directly
- You get long days, so you can do more in a day and be more satisfied with what you've done
- You get nice long nights
- Because it's not synced with normal day and night anyway, you don't have jet lags if you just keep to your normal pattern

Anyone want to try this? My parents probably wouldn't let me...

15-03-2008 05:59 PM   [Blog] A small little update about ActionScript
So I've been spending the day programming after reading for a few hours the day before, and after a lot of crap this is about where I am. It's a small .swf flash file (yes, you can open it):

http://www.sendspace.com/file/j70mdo

Remember, its more about the code than the looks right now and this is all standard pretty much :P
You type into the lower textbox. As soon as you start, it records the time and whenever you hit enter, the time is recorded again and compared to the start time to determine the time it took you to type whatever you did, and it's added to the autoscrolling box above that.

Note that you can't paste anything, you can't use your arrow keys and you shouldn't be able to select anything either. See if you can find some problems with it and I'll see if I can fix them :D
